It all began at Lenz Orthodontics…

February 24, 2020

Trent Deuster is one of our patients at Lenz Orthodontics whose orthodontic journey with us served as motivation for a total health transformation. Within only one year, Trent lost an astonishing 210lbs. His transformation was solely achieved through diet, exercise and motivation.

Read all about his journey below:

Braces Can Transform More Than Just a Smile

By Trent Deuster

When I decided to get adult braces with Dr. Lenz, I realized that this was an opportunity to not only improve my smile but to improve my overall health and appearance. His thorough explanation of the course of treatment and how to care for my teeth included reasons for eliminating certain foods that could damage the braces and my teeth. Candy, popcorn, and other hard or sticky treats were obvious, but this knowledge also became a foundation for me to start on a new path of healthier eating by making better choices in my overall diet. I was at an all-time high of being around 200 pounds overweight, so I decided that getting braces from Dr. Lenz was going to be the provocation I needed to get started on improving my overall appearance along with my smile. I knew I could do it with the right motivation, too. I had been inspired by many success stories on the internet from people who lost a great deal of weight in a variety of ways. Though no two individuals’ paths were exactly alike, I decided to take a bit of inspiration from each one and develop a plan that would be healthy, reasonable, doable, and work for me. While Dr. Lenz had been working diligently to improve my smile, I had been working hard to improve myself. On the day my braces came off, I was 210 pounds lighter than when they went on. The transformation was more than I could have ever dreamed of. I love my new smile, not only because my teeth look great, but because my smile reflects how inspired I feel about all that I have accomplished both physically and mentally through my weight loss journey. The changes I made were designed to be healthy and long-term, the same as my smile. Therefore, even though my braces are now off and I could go back to many of the foods I eliminated, I am choosing to continue to eat healthy to maintain my best smile and my best overall me, because getting braces with Dr. Lenz not only transformed my smile for the better, it improved my quality of life in many ways.

Key changes that worked for me:

  • Reading and understanding nutritional labels on all foods and drinks.
  • Eliminating foods with no nutritional value.
  • Remembering that baked or broiled is better than breaded and fried.
  • Limiting carbohydrates to no more than 20g per day.
  • Keeping within 2000 calories per day of food intake. (Amount differs by individuals.)
  • Planning meals in advance and eating as close as possible to the same time every day, with a focus on intermittent fasting.
  • Creating home-cooked meals that are rich in protein and veggies. (I prepare a variety of meats once per month into individual meals using a vacuum sealer, freezing them, and then cooking each as needed by water immersion or grilling. One day of labor and I am set for a month. I just add a side of baked or broiled fresh veggies or a salad each day.)
  • Asking for double veggies instead of starches when dining out.
  • Using nut milks, nut flours, healthy oils, and alternative sweeteners when cooking and baking. (Keto-specific recipes are a great resource for discovering delicious desserts and other foods to eat.)
  • Incorporating cardio exercise, such as a daily walk.
  • Taking daily vitamins and drinking plenty of water (sometimes with added flavors).
  • Seeing a primary doctor regularly for check ups throughout the weight loss process.

Give your Teen a Winning Smile

January 6, 2020

Does your teen avoid smiling because they don’t like their teeth? An adolescent’s smile can actually have a profound effect on their self esteem and even impact their social skills. Further, according to a research study out of Webster University, a confident smile can be seen as even more attractive than traditional good looks.

We know that our teens are super conscious of their image. Just look at the number of selfies they take, and how much time they spend liking, commenting and sharing their friends’ photos on Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram. That’s why when teens come to Lenz Orthodontics for orthodontic treatment, we want to be sure we have options for them, to ensure their confidence stays high while their smile improves.

Through orthodontic treatment (either with traditional braces or Invisalign) Dr. Mike and/or Dr. Mark Lenz can correct genetic issues from crowding and spaced teeth to protruding upper teeth. Or, we can address improper bites due to thumb-sucking as a child, periodontal disease, poor dental hygiene, early or late loss of primary teeth or trauma to the teeth from a sporting injury, for example.

The other good news is that adolescence is the optimal time to rectify orthodontic problems since teens haven’t yet finished growing. Early correction of orthodontic problems frequently takes less time in treatment and is less costly when compared to correction of dental problems that have been allowed to progress into adulthood.

Improving and encouraging your teens’ self esteem is one of our core values at Lenz Orthodontics. It’s one of the big reasons why we offer Invisalign (besides the fact that its excellent technology that allows us to create beautiful, healthy smiles). In fact, a recent study* by Invisalign, confirms that “people with straight teeth are perceived more likely to be happy” … we hope all our patients are leaving our practice happy after each and every appointment.

Want to give your teen a winning smile that will help boost their self confidence? Bring them to Lenz Orthodontics where we’ll give them a smile that will knock ‘em out of the park!

The Top Reasons Why You Should Seek Invisalign Treatment with an Orthodontist – by Dr. Mike Lenz

September 16, 2019

It seems that there are many options for straightening teeth these days and there’s no question clear aligners (Invisalign) are a front-runner. If done correctly, you can enjoy virtually invisible teeth-straightening while continuing to eat the foods you enjoy, brush and floss your teeth normally for better oral health, while having minimal office visits.

However, not all “invisalign treatment” is created equal and you might wonder why it’s necessary to see a properly trained orthodontist to provide your Invisalign treatment. Here are the top reasons why an orthodontist should treat you or your teen:

  • Orthodontists are specialists.

After college and dental school, orthodontists devote an additional 2-3 years to the study of only orthodontics. We practice orthodontics exclusively. We focus our continuing education on orthodontics and see hundreds of patients per month. We are uniquely positioned to use our knowledge and skills to help you get the best possible result. In addition to orthodontic residency, Dr. Mike has completed an Invisalign fellowship to ensure the highest quality of Invisalign treatment to our patients.

  • Orthodontists identify the cause of the problem, and then solve it.

You may see crooked or gapped teeth. We see the cause of the problem. Orthodontists use their education, experience and expertise to delve deep to discover the root of the issue and solve it in a way that is healthy and sustainable– for an attractive smile and a lasting result.

  • Orthodontics goes beyond your teeth.

Orthodontists study facial esthetics and understand how tooth movement can change your facial profile, smile line and general appearance. We understand how it relates to the face and future growth changes and take a holistic, comprehensive approach to your treatment so that your overall appearance is considered along with your smile.

  • You only want to do this once, do it right!

If Invisalign treatment is done incorrectly, many teeth, bite and jaw problems can arise. Everyone knows an orthodontist’s goals are to create a beautiful smile and a healthy bite. We ensure that the teeth, upper and lower jaws, gums and facial muscles are positioned so that you can bite, chew and speak well. Without taking these components into consideration, problems can arise, such as an unhealthy bite, issues with the jaw joint (TMJ), headaches, excessive wearing or chipping of the teeth, premature tooth loss and gum problems.

At Lenz Orthodontics we strive to provide the highest quality orthodontic treatment but also ensure incredible customer service and make you feel like you’re at home while you’re visiting us. We’re the friendliest, most fun orthodontic office around. Come by and meet me, Dr. Mike, my father, Dr. Mark Lenz and the entire staff to see what we mean!  Click below to schedule a complimentary consultation – we can’t wait to meet you!

How does your child sleep at night?

July 11, 2019

At Lenz Orthodontics we pride ourselves in being an “airway aware” orthodontic practice. We think it’s important to ask yourself the below questions about your child’s sleep habits – they can be very telling. If you notice any of the below signs, we encourage you to come visit our practice for a complimentary consultation where we can evaluate your child’s airway as well as their orthodontic needs.

5 Questions to ask yourself about your child’s sleep:

  • Does your child snore at night?
  • Does your child take long pauses in breathing while sleeping?
  • Does your child breathe through their mouth rather than through the nose?
  • Does your child experience drowsiness/tiredness during the day?
  • Does your child exhibit a change in behavior and/or a decline in school performance?

If your child is exhibiting any of these symptoms, it may be a sign that they are suffering from sleep disordered breathing (SDB) or even obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

What is OSA?

OSA is a common sleep disorder that affects approximately 6 percent of children. It’s caused by a partial or complete blockage of the airways while sleeping. During sleep, your child’s throat muscles relax allowing the tongue and fatty tissues of the throat to fall back into the airways and block airflow. During a sleep apnea event, air is restricted from moving beyond the blockage or restriction that ultimately reduces blood flow to the brain. As a result, the brain is signaled to partially awaken from sleep to tell the body it needs to breathe. This usually results in a loud gasping, choking, or snorting sounds as the child takes a deep enough breath to fight past the obstruction. It is this process that prevents your child from getting the restful and replenishing sleep they require.

While this condition can be improved, it is often left untreated because parents aren’t aware of the warning signs. So, how do you know if your kid actually has OSA or if they are symptoms of something else? Visit Lenz Orthodontics for an airway evaluation. Due to their expertise and familiarity with growth and development as well as orthopedic and surgical correction of the jaws, “airway aware” orthodontists are ideally suited to identify the symptoms of OSA.

Lenz Orthodontics

April 8, 2019

We are so honored to have been recently featured in Belle City Magazine! Below is a snippet of the article and a link to the full feature!

Carl Matteson photo

Dr. Joe Lenz, Dr. Mike Lenz, Dr. Mary Lenz, Dr. Mark Lenz, Therese Lenz and Dr. Kristin Lenz Galbreath represent the second and third generations of dentists in their family.

Liam Galbreath is only six months old, but the odds are pretty good that he’ll become a fourth generation dentist in his family.

Both of his great-grandfathers were dentists, his grandfather and uncle are orthodontists, his mother, uncle and aunt are all dentists. And his grandmother is a dental hygienist.

If he doesn’t become a dentist, he’ll always be assured of excellent dental care and straight teeth.

After Dr. Mark [second generation] completed his orthodontic residency at Marquette in 1984, he opened his private orthodontic practice in Racine, was appointed to the faculty of the orthodontic department at Marquette University as an assistant clinical professor, and became board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics in 1991.

Lenz Orthodontics opened a second location in Waterford in 2008.

Therese has worked alongside her husband in the orthodontic practice since the beginning and the couple raised their three children, all of whom attended Marquette University and became dentists.

Son Dr. Mike Lenz [third generation] finished his Master’s Degree and a Certificate of Specialty in Orthodontics in 2018 from Marquette and joined his father’s practice in August. He and his wife Dr Mary Lenz met as undergraduates at Marquette. Dr. Mary practices general dentistry in Twin Lakes, Wis.

Dr. Mike described his work as 1/3 scientist, 1/3 engineer and 1/3 artist, while his dad enjoys the transformation in confidence and self esteem, in both children and adults, “as we create beautiful healthy smiles!”

“People always remember two dates,” Dr. Mark said. “When they got married and when they got their braces off.”

With new technology utilized by the practice, the orthodontists explained they no longer use headgear, extractions of teeth are rarely needed, the braces are smaller and more comfortable and the forces applied to straighten the teeth are 500 times gentler.

“And with our new intra-oral scanner we no longer take ‘goopy’ impressions!” Dr. Mark said. “It’s definitely not your parents’ experience with braces.”

He noted that about 30 percent of their practice is treating adults, including an 82 year old.”

“Our patients are always happy to be here,” Dr. Mike added.

For those in the Lenz family practicing general dentistry, they prefer the variety of procedures and treating entire families.

They’re a close knit group and enjoy spending a lot of time together.

“It all started with our fathers and the value they placed on family and service to others.” Dr. Mark and Therese agreed. “And perhaps their legacy will extend to a fourth generation.”

At our orthodontic practice, offering clear aligners is an important treatment option for both adults and teenagers. When utilized properly by a trained orthodontic specialist, Invisalign, the leading clear aligner brand, can provide both teens and adults with the beautiful straight teeth they’ve always wanted — without braces.

A consultation with a trained orthodontist is the only way to know for sure whether it’s the appropriate treatment option, but understanding the benefits of Invisalign can help you make a decision as to whether it could be the right fit for your teen or yourself:

  1. They’re Completely Clear: Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. No closed-lipped selfies here! If you or your teen are self-conscious about appearing in photos, Invisalign could be the right choice.
  2. They’re a Confidence Booster: A recent study found that teens wearing Invisalign are twice as likely to experience a boost in self-esteem while in treatment than teens treated with metal braces. Based on what we’ve seen with our patients, the same holds true for adults!
  3. They’re Removable: Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing our patients to eat and drink whatever they’d like while in treatment and play certain sports more easily.
  4. No Goopy Impressions: We utilize the iTero digital scanner, which means no more mouthfuls of the old goopy impressions! So your treatment will be smooth and comfortable from start to finish.

And here’s a benefit for adults (whether the patient or parent!): With Invisalign there won’t be any brackets to become loose or broken, so there are potentially fewer emergency visits to the orthodontist, and fewer interruptions to your busy schedule!

At Lenz Orthodontics we strive to provide the highest quality orthodontic treatment but also ensure incredible customer service and make you feel like you’re at home while you’re visiting us. Read This Before Ordering Orthodontic Treatment Online

October 23, 2018

These days you can do almost anything with the click of a button. Order school supplies. Get a ride across town. Watch your favorite movie. Order food delivery. It seems like every day there’s a newer and easier way to do almost everything. We’ve been programmed to accept that anything can be ordered online and delivered right to your front door. However, at Lenz Orthodontics, there is one thing that we believe has no easy replacement: orthodontic treatment. There is no match for trained, experienced professionals when it comes to your dental health.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) agrees. They recently issued a Consumer Alert listing key questions to ask about direct-to-consumer orthodontic companies. You can download a print-friendly version here.

The issue is that many direct-to-consumer orthodontic companies do not involve the in-person evaluation and/or in-person supervision of your treatment we provide at Lenz Orthodontics. This type of supervision is important because there is more to creating a healthy, beautiful smile than moving the visible portions of your teeth. If not done correctly any dental work can lead to potentially irreversible and expensive damage such as tooth and gum loss, changes to your facial profile, and other issues. An orthodontist like Dr. Mark & Dr. Mike have many tools in his or her arsenal to help create your beautiful smile – Invisalign, for example, is just one of them. It’s important to have a fully qualified and certified orthodontist involved when making any changes to your teeth.

The Top 10 Questions To Ask

The AAO advises that when researching orthodontic treatment (including treatment models from direct-to-consumer companies like SmileDirectClub, Candid Co., Smilelove, SnapCorrect, Orthly, etc), you should consider many key questions, some of which include:

  1. As part of your treatment, are comprehensive diagnostic records like x-rays taken before your treatment?
  2. As part of your treatment fee, do you receive any in-person visits to a dentist’s or orthodontist’s office during your treatment?
  3. Is only one treatment type offered (such as invisible aligners or a certain appliance)?
  4. What are the possible risks (financial, health, etc.) associated with your orthodontic treatment?
  5. Who is responsible for detecting any issues that may occur during your orthodontic treatment? Is it you? If it is a doctor not associated with your treatment, who pays for those check-ups?
  6. If an emergency arises, does the company have a dentist or orthodontist in your area that you can see in-person? If not, who would cover the costs associated with seeing a dentist or orthodontist in your area?
  7. If you are injured or have another dispute involving your orthodontic treatment, how is it handled (litigation, arbitration, etc.) and what rights do you have?
  8. Does the treatment model comply with the dental laws in your state? To check your state’s dental laws, click Information for your state dental board can be found at

Where You Receive Your Health Care Is A Very Important Personal Decision

Remember that orthodontic treatment is not a product or device – it is a professional, medical service. Dr. Mark & Dr. Mike earned their dental degrees (DDS) at Marquette University and each went on to fulfil post-graduate residencies in Orthodontics. They have a commitment to regular continuing education and have years of experience providing high quality orthodontic treatment to their patients.

Before making any decision about orthodontic treatment, consider doing some research and having a complimentary in-person consultation at Lenz Orthodontics. Our friendly team is waiting to answer any of your questions and start you or your child on a path to a gorgeous smile.

Lenz Orthodontics is offers flexible financing with lower down payments and lower monthly payments. Click below to schedule a complimentary consultation and be the first to have your smartphone help straighten your teen’s smile!

Thrilled to Join My Dad at Lenz Orthodontics

July 26, 2018

I’m thrilled to be joining my dad’s practice this summer to carry on the family tradition of dental and orthodontic care. One of the things I love most about my profession is the positive effect it has on our patients’ lives. Each day I am able to work together with our patients toward creating beautiful, healthy smiles. Most importantly, however, I thoroughly enjoy getting to know all of our patients and watching them grow throughout treatment!

I’ve always looked up to my dad, whose compassion for his patients inspired my own journey through orthodontic training. I wanted to be just like him, and still do! Like my dad, I was also very interested in art and science and learned that orthodontics is truly a way to combine both disciplines. The passion my dad has for the art in each smile he creates is truly what sets him apart, and I am excited to share in that enthusiasm.

For me, joining Lenz Orthodontics is a chance to uphold the reputation for excellence in orthodontic care that the Lenz family has built in the Racine community over three generations. My goal is to work at my Dad’s level of expertise while treating patients with as much compassion as he does.

I look forward to meeting you soon!

Dr. Michael

Next Generation Joins Lenz Orthodontics

July 10, 2018

By Dr. Mark Lenz

I’m delighted and proud to announce that the next generation of my family will be joining Lenz Orthodontics. My son, Dr. Michael Lenz, will begin seeing patients this summer at our practice. He continues the tradition of oral care in the Lenz family that started with my father, who was a dentist in the community, and extends to Michael’s wife and siblings, all of whom are dentists. You can imagine that I’m a very proud dad! And don’t you worry, I’m not going anywhere.

For those of you that know me well, family always comes first and I’m excited to work side-by-side with my son just as I did with my own father. It’s truly a wonderful feeling to have worked hard for 36 years and to know that my dedication to the community will continue on through my son’s work. At the same time I look forward to partnering with my son to offer patients the same caring service and state-of-the-art treatment that they have come to know from Lenz Orthodontics, all while taking the practice to the next level.

You can call him Dr. Mike.

Dr. Mike is a third generation dentist having graduated from Marquette University School of Dentistry, where he also completed his orthodontic residency. When he’s not chairside, he enjoys outdoor activities including running, skiing and traveling with his wife, Mary. I look forward to introducing you to my son in the near future!

A Straight Smile Is the Best First Impression

June 27, 2018

We all know the saying, “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, but the reality is: we all do. First impressions are really important and your smile says a lot about you. That’s why at Lenz Orthodontics, we care about not only helping our teens, but about helping adults as well. A straight smile is crucial to making that first impression count…and metal braces as an adult isn’t necessarily the most desired look. Because of this we offer Invisalign Adult! The clear alternative to metal braces.

In a recent study* by Invisalign, confirms that “people with straight teeth are perceived more likely to be happy, successful and second date worthy.” Speaking of dating, 55% of respondents said that a straight smile had a better likelihood of attracting potential partners on a dating site by their picture alone.

Already found your partner but still think straighter teeth would have a strong impact on your life? You’re right! 58% of respondents said that they perceive people with straight teeth to be more successful in business and their professional lives. That means a straight smile can be a big component of your interview kit, rocking your next presentation or winning that next sale.

So how does Invisalign Adult work?

During a consultation at Lenz Orthodontics, Dr. Lenz determines the exact movements necessary to get your teeth into the correct position. Then the Lenz Orthodontics team has a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. As you replaces each Invisalign aligner with the next in the series, the teeth will gradually and gently shift-little by little, until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Lenz has prescribed.
Other than a great first impression once you’ve finished, Invisalign offers a great first impression while you’re working to achieve that great smile:
Clear: Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. No hiding your smile in meetings, engagement photos or school pick-ups and no closed-lipped selfies here!
Comfortable: Invisalign aligners are extremely comfortable made out of smooth, sleek plastic.
Removable: Don’t want your date to know you’re working on your smile? Take them off for the evening…just remember to put them back in before you go to sleep! It may not seem like it, but they’re constantly working while you go throughout your day.
Convenient: Fewer visits to the orthodontist, meaning fewer interruptions of your busy schedule. You only need to visit us at Lenz Orthodontics about once every 2-3 months to ensure that your treatment progress is on track.
Cost Effective: At Lenz Orthodontics, Invisalign comes at the same price tag as traditional braces. No need to shell out extra cash to avoid metal mouth. Plus we can offer little to no down payment.

First Impressions are super important to us too – call us today for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Lenz to assess if you are a good candidate for Invisalign Adult. We can’t wait to meet you!

For Young Kids Orthodontics Isn’t Just About A Pretty Smile

February 27, 2018

Every parent wants their child to be able to smile with confidence but for many that’s not the only reason to investigate orthodontics at an early age. While the average age for orthodontic treatment is around 12 years old, we at Lenz Orthodontics have a mission to focus on children 7 and up in order keep with the American Association of Orthodontics guidelines. Why 7 and up, you ask?

Early Orthodontic treatment has many benefits. An orthodontic consult at a young age can catch future issues and adjust for them before they become problems. Some of these issues include:

  • Airway Obstruction: well developed airways allow normal breathing through the nose when the mouth is closed. While this may sound trivial, nasal breathing is important because it’s now known to be vital to good health. Airway obstruction has been linked to developmental delays, sleep disorders, behavioral disturbances, and later can lead to hypertension, stroke, heart disease and even premature death. These sound scary but the treatment is easy if we are able to catch it early on! Plus we all can relate to our little ones that struggle with allergies!
  • Crossbites: by age 7 most children’s permanent molars and incisors have come in. A trained eye, like Dr. Lenz’s, can see early on if crowding or crossbites will be an issue as the rest of your child’s permanent teeth come in. The earlier treatment begins, the easier it will be. This is because your child’s jaw is less developed at this early age and can be guided along the right path rather than working to reverse issues at a later age.
  • Overcrowding: Traditionally, orthodontists would say wait until age 11 or 12 to treat a crowding problem, but the problem won’t get any better by waiting. Early treatment has been proven to correct narrow arch and create space for adult teeth as well as for the tongue so it may function correctly when swallowing. Plus, early treatment can avoid the need for future tooth extraction or jaw surgery. BIG PLUS!

The benefits to Early Orthodontic treatment are clear:

  • Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct any habits that can cause bad bite later on, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment. Speaking of…
  • Two Phase Treatment. Phase 1 works with your young child to make space for their permanent teeth. Phase 2 begins once they’ve arrived. Often children who undergo Phase 1 treatment have a much shorter Phase 2. This makes life easier for both them and you as their schedules get busier and busier.

Not every 7 year old will need Phase One treatment, but if they do, and if it is caught early by a trained orthodontist, it could make a big difference in the outcome of treatment later. That’s because Dr. Lenz can take advantage of growth and possibly avoid extractions when working with a younger child.

Knowing the importance of early orthodontics is only part of the battle. Dr. Mark Lenz has 35 years of experience in orthodontic practice and thousands of beautiful smiles credited to his name. We call it the Lenz Smile!

Signs That a Child is Suffering From Sleep Apnea

November 1, 2017

Does your child seem drowsy during the day? Does he or she snore or wake up breathless in the middle of the night? They could have Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – a chronic condition where breathing stops periodically during sleep because soft tissue is relaxing and obstructing the airway. These periodic stops can happen as many as 20-30 times in an hour and cause a lack of oxygen to the brain, waking up your child so that they restart proper breathing. All that waking up can leave one pretty sleepy the next day – even if they don’t remember waking up!
Untreated, obstructive sleep apnea can affect school work and overall alertness as well as raise your child’s risk of serious health problems down the road. These include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic acid reflux
  • Obesity
  • and even Depression

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology (ENTs) sleep disordered breathing affects approximately 12 percent of children.
Luckily, sleep apnea is easily treatable. It just needs to be diagnosed. That’s where you come in: if your child has any of the following symptoms, bring them to see us for a complimentary consultation at Lenz Orthodontics. The earlier the better! Symptoms can be caught and as early as age 3 or 4!
Here’s what to look for:

  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping (tossing and turning or night sweats)
  • Loud snoring at night
  • Waking up at night short of breath
  • Long pauses in breathing
  • Chronic mouth breathing during sleep
  • Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
  • Extreme drowsiness throughout the day
  • Changes in mood, misbehaviour or decline in school performance
  • Hyperactivity or inattention (in some cases children who are diagnosed with ADHD are actually not hyperactive but rather are showing the clinical symptoms of OSA.

Orthodontists are leading specialists in spotting Sleep Apnea early because of our familiarity and expertise in working with the soft tissue in children’s mouths. Looking for these symptoms also falls neatly in line with the Phase 1 treatment philosophy of promoting proper jaw development for young kids so that braces, when they’ve hit their pre-teen years, are a simpler process. As both an Orthodontist and parent, Dr. Lenz makes a point of asking all parents if they’ve noticed any of these symptoms when he first consults with new patients.
If your child is exhibiting any of these symptoms, bring them in for a complimentary consultation. If we see signs of sleep apnea we will get your child into the care of a sleep physician who can help with a treatment plan and make sure your kids are sleeping soundly!
While Sleep Apnea can have very serious side effects, it’s very treatable. The most important thing you can do is pay attention and have your child evaluated.
Making the decision about who should treat your child’s mouth is an important one. As a board certified orthodontist, Dr. Mark Lenz has 35 years of experience in orthodontic practice and thousands of beautiful smiles credited to his name. We call it the Lenz Smile!

Many parents know about Invisalign®, the virtually invisible way to straighten teeth without metal braces. But I’m often asked for more information about Invisalign® Teen.

In short, rather than wires and brackets, Invisalign® Teen uses a series of clear, removable aligners that have been custom-made for your teen’s teeth. Your teen simply wears these aligners over their teeth and changes them out for a new set of aligners periodically—most often every two weeks. Little by little, your teen’s teeth gradually shift into place.

Here are the answers to the top five questions I’m asked about Invisalign Teen. I hope you find it helpful!

When worn according to the customized plan I set in place, Invisalign Teen can be as effective as traditional braces. In fact, the chances are very high your teen will be a candidate for Invisalign as it can treat many of the common issues we see. Call us at 262.634.6900 (Racine) or 262.534.3010 (Waterford) to set up an appointment to find out for sure.

With Invisalign, the aligners are removable, so your teen can play sports, musical instruments and eat their favorite foods without the worry that braces will get in the way. Plus, it’s much easier to brush and floss normally to maintain proper oral hygiene.

Research shows that parents underestimate the extent to which teens feel self-conscious about their smile—and their appearance in general. Wearing braces can often make this lack of confidence even worse. Invisalign Teen removes a potential source of anxiety, giving them more confidence during what can be a challenging time in their lives.

Invisalign Teen is most effective when worn 20 to 22 hours per day and changed approximately every two weeks. In fact, Invisalign Teen aligners have blue indicators that fade over time when used as directed so I can track compliance.

Invisalign Teen often requires less time with your orthodontist than traditional braces do. There are no adjustments to make, no brackets to re-glue and no broken wires to fix. After the initial appointment, follow-up appointments are usually scheduled every four to six weeks.

Tips For Invisalign Patients

May 31, 2017

Invisalign straightens your teeth without wires and brackets, using a series of clear, customized, removable appliances called aligners. It’s virtually undetectable, which means hardly anyone will know that you’re straightening your teeth. To ensure the best possible results we decided to compile a list of a few tips for our patients currently using Invisalign.

  • Wear your aligners for a minimum of 2 weeks, before moving into the next aligner.
  • Sharp or rough edges can be smoothed with an emery board.
  • Change into your next aligner before going to bed so they settle in overnight.
  • Keep your aligners in their case while eating to avoid losing them. Keep the out of reach of any household pets, especially dogs!
  • If you need to, you can soak your Invisalign aligners in a mix of 50/50 white vinegar and cold water to brighten them.
  • Wear your aligners for at least 20 hours a day.
  • Always carry a toothbrush.
  • Only drink water when you’re wearing your aligners.
  • Don’t put your aligners in hot water.
  • Don’t use toothpaste to clean your aligners.

If you have any further questions about Invisalign please don’t hesitate to call us at our convenient Racine or Waterford practice

DON’T Do It Yourself

April 28, 2017

Lenz Orthodontics and the American Association of Orthodontists have a prompt announcement for consumers about “DIY” orthodontic treatment. It is with great urgency that we emphasize to you all to be cautious about the trending “DIY” orthodontic treatment because straightening your teeth on your own can lead to lifelong dental problems.

Do-It-Yourself videos and websites are popular among today’s culture, and while so many great ideas come from several of these outlets, there are some things that you just shouldn’t do yourself! Straightening your teeth or attempting to move your teeth as a “DIY” project is definitely one of the things you should not be doing. Moving and straightening teeth is a medical procedure that needs to be supervised by an orthodontist. It’s important for you all to be wary of any videos or websites that advise you to use objects such as rubber bands, dental floss, or anything else in order to get straight teeth. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, “Moving teeth without a thorough examination of the overall health of the teeth and gums could result in the permanent loss of teeth, which may result in expensive and lifelong dental problems.”

If you have any further questions regarding “DIY” orthodontics or are curious about straightening your teeth, please contact Lenz Orthodontics at our Racine or Waterford location

Spring Is Here!

April 14, 2017

As the flower buds are peeking out and birds are starting to chirp, it’s time to leave those thoughts of snowstorms behind. Spring can be a wonderful time to explore the outdoors or go for a walk around town. Get your family moving together and establish some healthy habits, away from the electronics indoors. We have 5 fun ideas to get you in the mood for the loveliest season of the year.

1. Dust off the sports gear. Find a kick a ball, throw a Frisbee, shoot hoops, whatever sports activity that you and your family enjoy doing.

2. Get dirty in the yard. Mow the grass. Pull weeds. Till flower beds. Replant. Cut back. Find the fun in getting sweaty, and teach your kids how to manage the landscaping while you do it.

3. Explore the outdoors. Hike a trail and check out the plants budding out of the ground.

4. Go to a baseball game. The beginning baseball season is one of the annual markers that warm weather is just around the corner. If you don’t have it in your budget for pricey pro tickets, look into local league games, college, or even high school games to watch.

5. Make Something. Whether you’re experimenting with a new recipe or creating a new craft, making something new will give your kids a sense of satisfaction.

After being cooped up all winter, everyone’s ready for some fresh Spring air. We hope you will step into the warm weather with suggestions of fun activities for the entire family.

More On Mouthguards

April 7, 2017

A mouthguard is an essential piece of athletic gear that should be part of your standard equipment from an early age when it comes to protecting your mouth

Contact and collision sports such as boxing and martial arts are higher-risk sports for the mouth. Any athlete can experience a dental injury in non-contact activities too, such as gymnastics and skating.

Types of Mouthguards
Mouthguards can be custom made for your mouth by your dentist or orthodontist. However, if you can’t afford a custom-made mouthguard, you should still wear a stock mouthguard or a boil-and-bite mouthguard from the drugstore.

Protecting Your Braces
A properly fitted mouthguard may be especially important for people who wear braces. A blow to the face could damage the brackets or other fixed orthodontic appliances. A mouthguard also provides a barrier between the braces and your cheek or lips, which will help you avoid injuries to your gums and cheeks.

If you’re an athlete and a patient at Lenz Orthodontics, talk to Dr. Lenz about selecting a mouthguard that will provide the right protection for you. Although some mouthguards only cover the upper teeth, Dr. Lenz may suggest that you use a mouthguard on the lower teeth if you have braces on these teeth.

Also, be sure to remember if you have a retainer or other removable appliance, do not wear it during any contact sports. For more information give us a call our Racine office at 262-634-6900 or 262-534-3010 for our Waterford office.

More On Damon Braces

March 30, 2017

Damon braces are a unique type of self-ligating braces that allow you to eliminate the rubber bands that cause so much trouble for traditional braces wearers. These braces use a steady pattern of pressure to correct your teeth, and they can shift your teeth more rapidly than traditional braces can.

The unique design of Damon braces helps to reduce the buildup of food particles and debris that can tend to get lodged in the brackets of traditional metal braces. Thus, eating with Damon braces can actually be easier because your cleaning job is simpler.

There are several different foods that you might want to focus on during your early days with Damon Smile braces. The most important thing to remember is that you need to focus on soft foods and non-chewy foods immediately after you get your Damon braces. Remember to chew carefully and evenly as you start to adjust to your new braces.

As you become comfortable with the braces, consider gradually re-introducing the crunchier and harder foods that you usually enjoy. Most Damon braces patients are able to eat virtually anything that they usually can, as long as caution is used. However, particularly chewy foods, for example taffy, are something that you might want to avoid in general.

Some Damon braces patients tell us that they are successful in eating all the same foods they did prior to braces! Overall, you can expect a very smooth transition into wearing Damon braces, and you will be able to enjoy remarkably fast smile correction at the same time.

If you are curious about Damon braces or if you have specific questions about how they can help you, please feel free to contact Lenz Orthodontics at our Racine or Waterford offices anytime!
