Upper Bonded Expander

What is it?

This appliance is designed to expand your upper arch and provide adequate space for the eruption of your upper adult teeth.

What do I do?

For the appliance to work properly it must be activated specifically according to Dr. Lenz’s instructions. The activation instructions will be provided on the day that the expander is placed.

Insert the key into the keyhole (but no further) then gently and steadily push the key from the front to the back of the mouth until you see the next keyhole appear. As you remove the key do not reverse this movement (pushing the key back towards the front of the mouth) simply slide the key straight out.

How will it feel?

You may feel some short term pressure on your teeth as the arch expands and possibly a tingling sensation in your cheek bones and the bridge of your nose. The topical anesthetic cream can be applied to soothe any irritated areas. Warm salt water rinses are also very soothing.

What changes can I expect?

As a result of your activations, expect to see a space open between your two front teeth. This is a good sign! The space will close once the activations are completed. You may notice short term change in your speech initially. Speak slowly and distinctly until your tongue adapts to the expander. Reading aloud helps to speed this process. Chewing and swallowing may be difficult at first. Softer foods and cutting foods into smaller pieces is recommended for the first week.

Care

It will take more time to brush and floss your teeth after the expander is placed.  Be sure to thoroughly clean your appliance with your toothbrush, and rinse your mouth vigorously. A Water Pik is very helpful to clean in and around your expander. Check carefully when you are finished brushing to make sure your teeth, gum lines and the expander are sparkling clean!

Avoid all hard, sticky or chewy foods which can damage your appliance. Also avoid soda, even diet soda, and sports drinks, as these can cause discoloration and decay. Use your fluoride rinse daily throughout your orthodontic treatment.
